Gene Stone, great-grandson of the legendary North Shore woodsman “Hungry Jack,” died at home on Oct 10, 2021 with family at his side.
Born in Duluth on Oct. 24, 1946 to Margaret (Amyotte) and Einor Stone, young Gene was an intelligent & curious child who loved animals & tinkering. He later joined the Navy & Coast Guard, where he was awarded the Commendation Medal for his heroic actions in saving a father & son who capsized in rough seas. He worked as an aircraft mechanic, commercial fisherman, in logging & construction, and managed the Grand Portage marina. Gene was a member of the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. His home on Reservation River was a popular place for folks to gather, as he always had time for others & a spare beer for a friend. He loved making people laugh, hunting, growing, gathering, and smoking fish. His humble spirit will be greatly missed.
Gene is survived by daughter Wendy Waha (Jerry), son Aaron Stone, & sister Jan Koski. Grandchildren- Allister, Tyrone, Victor, Aaron 2nd, Pamela, Kammie, & Jacob. Nephews Jess, Mike, & Billy. Nieces Babe, Lori, & Luanne. And beloved great-grandchildren, cousins, and special friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, a son Rick, sister Mary Ellen, and niece Shari. -Celebration of Life- Outdoor fire, pot-luck, & Giveaway @516 S 64 Ave W, Sun. Oct. 24 from 1-4 pm.
