Joyce Ruth Nichols Kunz died at age 92 on March 10, 2020 at Brookdale Eden Prairie (Eden Prairie, MN) of complications of dementia. She was predeceased by her first husband, Richard Kunz (Duluth, MN) in 1998 and by her son, David Kunz (Two Harbors, MN) in 2016. She is survived by her husband Bernard Hughes (Superior, WI), her daughter Cynthia Kunz (Surf City, NC), and daughter-in-law Susan Dunn, grandsons Nicholas Kunz and Morgan Kunz (Carolyn Roby), and great grandchildren Felix, Calvin, and Phoebe Kunz (Minneapolis, MN).

Joyce graduated from South St. Paul High School and attended the St. Louis Conservatory of Music and The College of St. Scholastica. She was a gifted pianist, organist, and teacher who taught generations of young piano students, accompanied singers, and served as organist and music coordinator for the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth. She raised her two children and relished her role as grandmother to her adored grandsons. She was active in the Congregation, the local music community, the League of Women Voters, Great Decisions, and the St. Luke’s Hospital hospice program.

A beloved wife, mother, aunt, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend to many, she brought to all she encountered a sunny disposition, spiritual strength, and independence of mind, along with exuberant creativity, humor, and a deep kindness and care for others. She will be sorely missed and long remembered with great love.

The family will hold a celebration of life at a later time. Contributions in Joyce’s memory may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth, 835 W. College Street, Duluth, MN 55811 or the Duluth Public Library, 502 W. Superior Street, Duluth, MN 55802.
