Edward W. Engelson

Edward W. Engelson, 98, Duluth Township, died Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Essentia Health.

Ed was born to Edward G. and Ester (Olson) Engelson on December 31, 1922 in Duluth, and was a life-long resident of Duluth Township. He graduated from Clover Valley High School in 1941, and from 1943-1946 served in the U. S. Army as a medical technician at Fort Riley, Kansas. After attending Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, he was employed by the D M & I R Railway as fireman in the Two Harbors roundhouse for several years, then worked as a millwright for Superwood Corp in Duluth from 1962 to 1988. He married Jeannine Marie Gibeau on August 24, 1957 in Grandview, Wisconsin.

Ed was a member of French River Lutheran Church, and the American Legion, and was privileged to participate in the Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Ed was a founding member of the Imperial Order of the Mystic Knights of the Beaver Dam, Valhalla on Birch Knoll, and served as treasurer and barrister. He enjoyed working in his garage, where his “service is style” mantra reigned. His robust projects were deemed indestructible. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, and vegetable gardening, and was known for his quick wit and funny one-liners.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Esther Wilk and Mary Hendrickson; a niece, Bonnie Hendrickson; and a grandson, Nicholas Bray.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeannine; children, Charles (Holly Snow) Engelson, Loreen Engelson, Paul Engelson, Robert (Marcy) Engelson, Karen (Brian) Dahl; grandchildren, Brianna (Patrick Curran) Engelson, Marissa (Tim Obrecht) Engelson, Andrew (Lauren) Bray, Allison Dahl, Mark (Olivia Perrigo) Dahl and Anna Engelson; great-granddaughter, Auden; a nephew, Ron (Gail) Hendrickson, and a niece, Elaine Karel and their families.

Memorials are preferred to French River Lutheran Church
