Dr. Rita Marie Makela (St. George)

Dr. Rita Marie Makela (St. George), passed away suddenly on September 18, 2020 in her home.

Rita was born July 1, 1963 to Roberta (Barber) and Gerald Jackson in Duluth, MN. She has two brothers, Jerry (Puff) Jackson of Missouri and Kevin Jackson of Chisolm MN.

Rita was a devoted mother to 5 children: son, Ben Preston of Duluth, son, Jonathan and Sarah (Momen) Preston of Solon, OH, daughter, Heidi (Preston) and Shane Collins of Coshocton OH, son, Brandon St. George, and daughter, Arianna St. George of Duluth. Rita was the absolute most loving grandma to her 8 grandchildren: Preston, Paris, Pierce, Piper, Emma, Sawyer, London, and Farrah.

Rita married Bruce Makela on February 25, 2010. They made each other’s lives happy and whole, while spending time with all their grandchildren.

Rita remained close to her former husband, Ernie St. George, who plays an active role in everyone’s life.

Rita was preceded in death by her parents, Roberta and Gerald Jackson.

At an early age, life forced Rita to drop out of high school making her future uncertain but she was determined to better her future, eventually earning her PhD in clinical and forensic psychology. She always wanted to make sure her children had a great life and only the best opportunities for brighter futures.

We love you Mom beyond measure and are grateful for the lives and opportunities you’ve afforded us and the unwavering support for all things we’ve wanted.  We will be strong as we know it’s what you’d want and we will always miss you. We love you.

A celebration of Rita’s life took place from 5 – 7pm on Wednesday, Sept. 23rd at 2415 E. 2nd St, Duluth, MN.
