Dorothy Verna Elowson, 100 years of age, lifelong Superior resident, died on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Harmony House Assisted Living in Superior, WI. She was born on April 3, 1919 in Superior, Wisconsin to Jonathan and Hannah (Bowman) Lindberg. She graduated from Superior Central High school and Superior Vocational College. Dorothy married John W. Elowson in 1946 and they celebrated 29 years of marriage before his passing in May of 1975.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Kelly Furniture for a couple years until her and her husband bought a store on North 21st Street. They owned and operated Savway Market in Billings Park for twenty-three years. Her husband John was the store’s butcher, and they sold everything and specialized in health foods and supplements.

Dorothy was a peoples person and she enjoyed getting to know people and helping them when she could. She helped poor families, particularly people with disabilities. She remembers assisting a woman in East End with daily chores because her hands were so bad. She also loved being involved in the community. That was very important to her. She worked for the city as an election official in Billings Park, she joined the Superior Flower Club, serving as president and she worked in a Good News Club in the back of their grocery store with a youth group. Three members of the youth group became preachers which made her very proud.

Dorothy attended Hope Congregation Church for many years. She credits God for her longevity. The biggest thing to her was she had God in her life when she lost her little boy, Joey Elowson at eight years of age she leaned on God.

She recently celebrated her 100th birthday on April 3rd. Her favorite statement was when someone would ask how old are you? She would say “39 and holding”. Dorothy was a grand lady and she hopes she left something good behind that everyone will remember.

Dorothy is survived by her son and daughter in law, Billy and Roxana Elowson, granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Tatiana and Jake Bergum and two great-granddaughters, Eloise and Esther Bergum. She is preceded in death by her husband John, her son Joey, her parents and seven brothers and three sisters.
