Vernon "Oz" Ralph Spoolman

Vernon "Oz" Ralph Spoolman, 83, of Mahtowa passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 in Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet. He was born August 5, 1935 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Ralph and Leone Spoolman. The family moved frequently while Oz was a young boy. They lived in Downers Grove, Illinois and Brooklyn, New York before moving to Duluth when Oz was 12 years old. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1956. Oz worked for Western Electric in Duluth and was later transferred to Omaha, Nebraska. He married Claire-Em Myhre on February 6, 1962 in Omaha. They lived there for three years before moving to Mahtowa. Oz worked for Mahtowa Gas from 1968 until 1985, when he went to work at Northern Minnesota Utilities until his retirement in 2000.

Oz served in the National Guard from 1955 until 1962. He was a former member of Salem Lutheran Church in Mahtowa and a current member of the Jesus Center in Barnum. He enjoyed spending time at the cabin on Park Lake, golfing at 29 Pines in Mahtowa and fishing and playing basketball with the grandkids. He ran four Grandma's Marathons and was the founder of the Mahtowa 10K Fun Run.

Oz was preceded in death by an infant brother, Gordon Spoolman.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Claire; son, Steve (Kristi) Spoolman of Brooklyn Park; daughter, Kathy (Mike) Ahlrich of Sleepy Eye; sister, Dolores Spoolman of Superior; and four grandchildren, Rebeccah and McKayla Ahlrich and Allison and Jake Spoolman.
