Harold Dean Hanson

Harold Dean Hanson, 62, of Duluth, died Tuesday, June 12, 2018 in Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born February 14, 1956 in Ortonville, MN, the son of Gordon and Betty Hanson. Harold graduated from Bellingham High School and Mankato State University with a degree in elementary education. He also graduated from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks with a teaching certificate for vision loss and most recently was attending WITC for a degree in Gerontology.

Harold married Martha Ryttie on July 15, 2000 in Jay Cooke State Park. He taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades for 13 years in McKinnon, Wyoming. Harold was baptized and confirmed in the Louisburg Lutheran Church. He was a stamp collector and a member of the American Philatelic Society. Harold was a former member of the Lions Club in Wyoming and was an avid John Deere collector. He was employed by Lighthouse for the Blind in Duluth where he taught braille and living skills to low vision students. Harold also created and managed the Lighthouse's Twin Ports Low Vision Store. He will be greatly missed by his many past and present students.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; great niece, Zo Mae Kittelson; and mother- and father-in-law, Edwin & Diana Kumpula and his faithful companion, Whiskers.

Harold's unique sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Martha of Duluth; children, Jonas Ryttie (Linda Matos) of South Range, WI, Nathan (Ashley) Ryttie of Fargo, ND, and Lisa (Chris) Copeland of Twentynine Palms, CA; grandchildren, Ashlee (Anthony) During, Dylan Ryttie, Alicia Ryttie and Owen Ryttie; great grandchildren, Izzibella and Ellayna During; siblings, Janette Hanson (Don Dittes) of Appleton, MN, Steve Hanson (Mary Zuehlke) of Mankato, Wayne (Nancy) Hanson of Pollock, SD, and John Hanson of Eden Prairie; sisters-in-law, Norma (Brad) Hill of Cohasset and Elaine (Dick Shrake) Kumpula of Lakeland Shores; nieces and nephews, Suzy (Dave) Buchholz, Cindy (Chris) Carl, Brian (Ashley) Kittelson, Chris (Traci) Hanson, Ryan (Angie) Hanson, Paige (PJ) Meyer, Greg Hanson, Keith Hanson, Bennett Hanson, Nikki Hanson, Charles (Samantha) Hill, Brian (Trudy) Hill, Sheina (Bryan) Showen, Linnea Keller, Aaron Hill, James Shrake, Michael Shrake, and Andrew Shrake; and many extended family and friends.
