Stephana "Mary" Novak
Stephana L. "Mary" Novak, 94, of Gilbert passed away peacefully with family at her side on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Marywood Assisted Living. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, May 21 at 10:30am at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Gilbert with Fr. Brandon Moravitz as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church. Inurnment will be in the Gilbert Cemetery.
Mary was born in Gilbert to Frank and Josephine (Babich) Lopp. She was a 1941 graduate of Gilbert High School and in 1944, married Joseph F. Novak of Virginia, MN. Mary worked as a stenographer at the Cleveland Graphite Bronze Company in the early 1940s and as a postal clerk in Gilbert for 26 years, retiring in 1984.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, St. Ann's Guild, the KSKJ Lodge and the Gilbert American Legion Auxiliary. Mary was a talented
seamstress who could sew anything - from clothing, to draperies, to bridal gowns. She was an avid reader and took stacks of books and magazines home from the library. She loved to dance and floated across the dance floor with Louis Sherek. Stephana traveled extensively, including trips to Slovenia and Fiji, and enjoyed many winters in California with her daughter Marybeth.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Josephine Lopp; husband, Joseph; sister, Frances Lopp, and special companion, Louis Sherek.
Mary is survived by her children Marybeth (Edward) Navas of Devore, CA, Linda Vukson of Duluth and Tom Novak of Gilbert; brother, Frank (Yvonne) Lopp of Gilbert; granddaughters Karin (Steve) Patronas and Bethany (Matt) Kostolnik; great-grandchildren Ellen, Ava, Mia and Ivy Patronas and William, Joseph and Emma Kostolnik; sister-in-law Mary Ann Novak and numerous nieces and nephews.
