Delores Mae Johnson

Delores Mae Johnson, age 93, passed away on Friday, March 2nd, at St. Luke's Hospice.

She was born on January 24, 1925, in Hibbing, Minnesota, to Finnish immigrants, Martha and Herman Thompson. After graduating from Hibbing High School, she married a Swedish immigrant, Arne Leonard Johnson, on September 27, 1943.

She worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Hibbing, and later in Duluth, when Arne transferred with U.S. Steel. While raising their children, Diane, Delrae, and Dale, she was active in Northern Pine Girl Scouts as a troop leader and a member of the board. She was also active with Little League Baseball and Woodland Hockey. She lovingly made countless doll outfits for her daughter's dolls. Shortly after her children were grown, Delores became Arne's caregiver, after he was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease at age 59 until he died at age 67.

She married Walter "Tim" Wright on July 15, 1995, and they shared 18 wonderful years together, until he passed away in 2014. They loved spending their winters living on their waterfront property on the Dora Canal in Tavares, Florida. They traveled often, frequented auction and rummage sales, and loved to dance. They even played cards every morning to see who would be the "boss" for the day.

Delores was an avid reader throughout her life, most often reading romance novels. She had an artistic flair, loved to draw, color, and paint. She also enjoyed gardening and worked with her beautiful flowers until the last summer of her life. She was always very proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and loved spending time with her family. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Arne and Tim; brother, Delano "Dingo" Thompson; and stepdaughter, Jennifer Wright.

She is survived by her daughters, Diane (Jim) Miner, Delrae (Brent) Smith; son, Dale (Lia) Johnson; grandchildren, Heather (Mike) Seyfer, Patrick (Jodilyn) Miner, Peter (JeAnna) Miner, Paul Miner, Reid (Kristen) Smith, Neil (Theresa) Smith, Boyd Smith, Kasey Johnson, and Evi Johnson; great grandchildren, Gabrielle, Margot, Della, Aubrey, Ashlyn, Annika, Graham, Layla, and one more on the way; and stepchildren, Theresa Wright, Cathy Wright, Donna (Scott) Hanna, Bud (Dido) Wright, and their children and grandchildren.

Gathering of Family and Friends: 10am Tuesday, March 20 at Sunrise Funeral Home, 4798 Miller Trunk Hwy, Hermantown, MN, with a memorial service at 11am.
