Woman dies after Grand Rapids stabbing
A 20-year-old woman died Tuesday night after police say she was stabbed on a playground at a Grand Rapids elementary school.
Police were called to Murphy Elementary School, 822 NE Fifth Ave., at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, where they found Chere Morgan of Grand Rapids lying on the playground unconscious with a stab wound to her abdomen.
A 15-year-old Grand Rapids boy was standing next to her with a knife in his hand, police said. He was taken into custody at the scene.
Morgan was taken to Grand Itasca Hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.
The boy made a first court appearance today in Itasca County on felony charges of second-degree murder and sale of a controlled substance in a school zone. Authorities did not identify the suspect Wednesday.
The Itasca County Attorney’s Office has filed a motion to try the juvenile in adult court. Ninth Judicial District Judge Heidi Chandler will consider the motion during hearings scheduled for May 1 and May 14.
Police believe the two arranged to meet at the playground, and drugs were found at the scene, Grand Rapids Police Chief Scott Johnson said in a news release. The meeting was not related to the school, and the public is not in danger, Johnson said.
The incident remains under investigation. The Minnesota State Patrol, Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Bovey Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assisted at the scene.
