The Duluth school district was the victim of a phishing scam Wednesday, resulting in the loss of email communication for part of the day.

A phishing scam is an attempt from someone to obtain sensitive information online by pretending to be a trustworthy source. In this case, an employee’s name was used with the Dropbox file hosting service to get users to click on something that spread malicious emails, said superintendent Bill Gronseth.

The district shut down the server to address the problem, and it was back in service by Wednesday afternoon.
