Northland records 491 COVID-19 cases this week

One COVID-19-related death was recorded in St. Louis County.

The Northland recorded 491 cases of COVID-19 in its 10-county region Aug. 20-26. In that time, one COVID-19-related death was recorded, in St. Louis County.

Since Aug. 1, 52 COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized in St. Louis County and 14 people have been admitted to an intensive care unit. This is an increase of 18 hospitalizations and four ICU admissions since Thursday, Aug. 19.

  • Aitkin — 21.
  • Carlton — 59.
  • Cook — 12.
  • Itasca — 51.
  • Koochiching — 22.
  • Lake — 7.
  • St. Louis — 262.
  • Ashland — 13.
  • Bayfield — 13.
  • Douglas — 31.

St. Louis County

Of the 491 new cases in the Northland this week, 262 were in St. Louis County, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Last week, there were 165 cases in the county.

  • Mountain Iron — 11.
  • Hermantown — 10.
  • Tower — 9.

  • Angora, Ely — 3 each.
  • Aurora, Buhl, Floodwood, Side Lake — 2 each.
  • Cotton, Embarrass, Hoyt Lakes, Zim — 1 each.

The seven-day test positivity rate could not be determined this week due to the Minnesota Department of Health reporting a backlog of 62,000 negative tests spanning over the last year.

Carlton County

Carlton County logged 59 new cases this week. The previous week, the county reported 41 positive cases.


New cases in Carlton County ZIP codes Aug. 20-26, according to Minnesota Department of Health data:

  • Cloquet — 17.
  • Moose Lake —15.
  • Carlton — 10.
  • Barnum — 8.
  • Cromwell, Kettle River — 2 each.
  • Esko, Holyoke, Wrenshall, Wright — 1 each.

In the Northland, an additional 1,540 people received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total of Northland residents with at least one dose to 230,781, and 1,495 people became fully vaccinated. The total number of fully vaccinated Northlanders is now 217,585 — about 55% of the Northland's total population.
