ST. PAUL — The rate of positive COVID-19 tests in Minnesota has remained at a pandemic-long high for several days, offering a possible sign the recent surge of infections has started to level out.
The seven-day rolling average test positivity rate as of Jan. 11, the most recently available date for that figure, was 23.7%, according to the Minnesota Department of Health's report for Monday, Jan. 24. That's the third report in a row the rate has sat at that level. Viral surveillance data of Twin Cities sewage water released by the Metropolitan Council last week also suggest new infections leveled out around the same time.
Minnesota hospitalizations for COVID-19 have remained high for the month of January, with the state on Monday reporting 238 patients in an intensive care unit and 1,328 in standard hospital care for a total of 1,566.
While ICU beds remain in short supply across the state, the overall number of COVID-19 patients who need that level of care has slowly dropped as the omicron variant of the virus came to dominate cases in Minnesota and the U.S. In mid-December, the number of Minnesota patients in an ICU for COVID-19 reached the upper 300s. That number has steadily dropped since.
