ROCHESTER, Minn. — Before any exercise program, you need to know your current strengths so you know where to focus.
"We're doing a movement screen with seven exercises," says Leah Sicher Hearle, a sports medicine specialist in Rochester, Minnesota. "It's really important before you start to understand a person's ability and their history and if they've had any injuries."
The simple assessment reveals where Renata Newcomb — one of Sicher Hearle's besties — is in terms of movement.
"I want to be able to lift things onto a high closet shelf without having to think about it," says Newcomb.
The seven exercises measure flexibility, stability, balance, joint range of motion, core strength, stamina and posture.

Newcomb is in great shape already, but wants to increase strength and flexibility, especially in her shoulders. Leah will draw up a plan for her.
In our Friday podcast, we'll go in depth to learn more about our Goal Getter duo and details about Newcomb's plan and how it's going. Plus we'll share some yummy yet healthy recipes.
