The Northland recorded 1,888 cases of COVID-19 in its 10-county region from Nov. 5-11. Last week, the region recorded 1,653 new cases. Carlton, Cook, Itasca, St. Louis and Douglas counties all recorded their highest seven-day total of cases for 2021 this week. The Northland's seven-day case total is also the highest seen this year.

There were 11 COVID-19-related deaths recorded in the Northland this week, according to the Minnesota Department of Health and Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Seven deaths were in St. Louis County. Carlton, Koochiching, Lake and Ashland counties each recorded one death.

Thirty-two people Nov. 5-10 were hospitalized with COVID-19 in St. Louis County, including one pediatric patient, according to St. Louis County Public Health. Three patients were admitted to an intensive care unit in the six-day period.

School outbreaks

Forty-eight Northland schools have COVID-19 outbreaks. The following schools listed have five or more confirmed cases in students or staff who were in the building while infectious during a two-week reporting period, the Minnesota Department of Health reported Thursday:

  • Denfeld High School, East High School, Homecroft Elementary, Laura MacArthur Elementary, Lincoln Park Middle School, Lowell Elementary, North Shore Community School, North Star Academy, Ordean East Middle School and Pike Lake Elementary all in Duluth.

  • Hermantown Elementary, Hermantown Middle School and Hermantown Senior High in Hermantown.
  • Eveleth-Gilbert Senior High and Franklin Elementary in Eveleth.
  • Nelle Shean Elementary in Gilbert.
  • Roosevelt Elementary and Virginia Secondary in Virginia.
  • Cherry Elementary and Cherry Secondary in Iron.
  • Hibbing High and Lincoln Elementary in Hibbing.
  • Mesabi East Elementary and Mesabi East Secondary in Aurora.
  • North Woods Secondary in Cook.
  • Vaughan Elementary in Chisholm.
  • Mountain Iron-Buhl Secondary in Mountain Iron.
  • Minnehaha Elementary in Two Harbors.
  • Barnum Elementary and Barnum Secondary in Barnum.

According to data from St. Louis County Public Health, 192 cases were recorded in people younger than 20 in the six-day period Nov. 5-10. Data from Thursday was not reported due to the Veterans Day holiday. People age 20-24 accounted for the largest case total in the county, with 81 people in each age category testing positive.

The second-highest total of new cases was reported in people age 30-34, with 69 positive cases.

St. Louis County

Of the 1,888 new cases in the Northland this week, 1,017 were in St. Louis County, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Last week, there were 921 cases in the county.

  • Hibbing — 106.
  • Virginia — 45.
  • Hermantown — 36.
  • Chisholm — 31.
  • Eveleth — 18.
  • Ely, Gilbert — 15 each.
  • Aurora — 14.
  • Hoyt Lakes, Proctor — 13 each.
  • Mountain Iron — 12.
  • Cook, Saginaw — 10 each.
  • Orr — 7.
  • Buhl, Embarrass — 6 each.
  • Biwabik — 5.

All other St. Louis County cities recorded fewer than five cases. Cases were only recorded by city through Wednesday due to the Veterans Day holiday.

As of Thursday, the county's seven-day testing positivity rate was 9.9%, down 1.1% from last week. The county conducted 10,300 tests Nov. 4-11.

Carlton County

Carlton County logged 153 new cases in the last week. Those new cases came from 1,739 tests, putting this week's testing positivity rate at 8.8%, up 0.2% from last week.

All other Carlton County cities recorded fewer than five cases.

All Northland Minnesota counties had positive test rates above 5% this week. Aitkin, Itasca and Koochiching counties all had rates above 10%. Itasca County's positive test rate was the highest at 17.8%.

In the Northland, 248,423 residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine — about 62% of the Northland's total population — and 234,736 residents are fully vaccinated — about 59% of the total Northland population.
