The Northland recorded 512 cases of COVID-19 in its 10-county region Aug. 27-Sept. 2. In that time, four COVID-19-related deaths were recorded. There was one death each in Aitkin and Itasca counties. St. Louis County recorded two COVID-19-related deaths, including a person who was between ages 45 and 49.

In August, 68 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized in St. Louis County and 19 people were admitted to an intensive care unit. This is the most COVID-19 ICU admissions in a month the county has seen this year.

St. Louis County

Of the 512 new cases in the Northland this week, 268 were in St. Louis County, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Last week, there were 262 cases in the county.

New cases in St. Louis County cities Aug. 27-Sept. 2, according to St. Louis County Public Health:

  • Duluth — 97.
  • Hibbing — 30.
  • Virginia — 26.
  • Eveleth — 15.

  • Chisholm — 14.

  • Saginaw — 11.
  • Britt, Gilbert, Mountain Iron, Proctor — 9 each.

  • Hermantown — 6.
  • Ely, Hoyt Lakes — 5 each.
  • Babbitt, Cook — 4 each.
  • Aurora — 3.
  • Angora, Floodwood, Meadowlands, Soudan, Tower, Zim — 1 each.

As of Thursday, the county's seven-day testing positivity rate was 3.8%, down 0.4% from last week. The county conducted 7,071 tests Aug. 27-Sept. 2.

Carlton County

Carlton County logged 30 new cases in the last week. Those new cases came from 1,805 tests, putting this week's testing positivity rate at 1.7%, down 0.5% from last week.

Itasca County had a positivity rate of 9% as of Thursday. Aitkin County had a positivity rate of 7.3%. Any county with a percentage rate higher than 5% is considered to have community transmission of the coronavirus. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, all Northland counties have high or substantial levels of community transmission. Lake, Cook and Ashland counties had substantial community transmission, while the rest had high transmission.

In the Northland, an additional 1,425 people received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total of Northland residents with at least one dose to 232,206, and 1,822 people became fully vaccinated. The total number of fully vaccinated Northlanders is now 219,407 — about 55% of the Northland's total population.
