Minnesota Department of Health reported Thursday another 288 Northland teens got their first COVID-19 vaccine dose.

From April 21-27 statewide, 11,910 more 16- and 17-year-olds have been vaccinated, for a total of 38,909.

The number of first doses administered to 16- and 17-year-olds in Northland counties as of April 27 are:

  • 74 in Aitkin County.

  • 280 in Carlton County.

  • 39 in Cook County.

  • 236 in Itasca County.

  • 36 in Koochiching County.

  • 74 in Lake County.

  • 1,483 in St. Louis County.

St. Louis County teens continue to keep cases low in their age groups, while statewide, teens have the largest number of cases.

In St. Louis County in the past week, those age 4 and under had nine new cases; ages 5-9 had 16 new cases; 10-14 had 24 new cases; and ages 15-19 had 26 new cases. These cases only make up 2.89% of new cases in St. Louis County in the past week.

Statewide, cases counted over the past week in these age groups include; age 4 and under, 458; ages 5-9, 654; ages 10-14, 1,007; and ages 15-19, 1,263. These cases make up 29.38% of new cases statewide in the past week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-verified 14-day case rates per 10,000 residents around the Northland for April 4-17 were:

  • 29.68 in Aitkin County.

  • 36.58 in Carlton County.

  • 11.3 in Cook County.

  • 57.74 in Itasca County.

  • 11.35 in Lake County.

  • 39.28 in St. Louis County.

  • 39.5 in the Duluth area.

  • 43.5 in Central/Southern St. Louis County.

  • 20.4 in Northern St. Louis County.

The 14-day case rates are used as guidance for school districts when choosing the right learning model for middle and high school students. Elementary students are allowed to return to in-person learning five days a week starting Jan. 18 regardless of these numbers.

According to Essentia Health’s COVID-19 Regional Projections dashboard, the county 14-day case rates per 10,000 residents as of April 26 were:

  • 19 in Aitkin County.

  • 29 in Carlton County.

  • 15 in Cook County.

  • 76 in Itasca County.

  • 18 in Lake County.

  • 33 in St. Louis County.
