COVID-19 cases among schools continue to rise statewide and a record number of school buildings were added to the weekly facilities exposures list Thursday.

From Oct. 25-31, there were 834 more positive cases in schools statewide, with 435 new cases among staff and 399 among students. This is the largest reported increase since the Minnesota Department of Health began reporting numbers Oct. 2. Statewide, 99 more school buildings reported at least one new case.

From Oct. 18-31, 456 school buildings reported one confirmed case, 212 reported two to four and 72 reported more than five.

The 14-day case rate per 10,000 residents, certified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and released Thursday by the Minnesota Department of Health, shows an increase across all counties except for in Itasca County, which has decreased since public health officials and students made a plea to the public. Itasca County Public Health Department manager Kelly Chandler told the News Tribune the most recent numbers show the county above 50 again.

The 14-day case rates for Oct. 11-24:

Thirty school buildings were put on the Minnesota Department of Health's list Thursday of school buildings with five or more positive cases in a two-week span. None were in the Northland.

A school building is put on the list if it reports five or more confirmed cases in students or staff who were in a building while infectious during a two-week reporting period. The building is removed after 28 days of no new positive tests.

Thirty is the highest single-week addition to the list. Isanti Middle School was removed from the list Oct. 29, but was added back to the list Thursday. In addition to the 30 new school buildings added to the list, three were removed for a total of 70 as of Thursday.
