Construction officially has begun on the Duluth school district's long-range facilities plan. Work crews arrived at Lakewood and Stowe Elementary schools -- the first two sites scheduled for renovations under the plan -- in early June. A sneak peek inside each revealed missing ceiling panels, torn-up flooring and a stockpile of classroom equipment as workers attempt to update the old in time for the upcoming school year.

Lakewood Elementary School

Architect: Architectural Resources Inc., Duluth

Engineer: Foster Jacobs and Johnson Inc., Duluth

Program manager: Johnson Controls

Construction manager: Johnson Controls

Construction budget: $2.9 million

Scope of work: Installation of an updated firm alarm system, sprinkler system, security system, energy efficient lighting and heating and cooling systems and classroom Smart Board; upgrades to the school's playground equipment and to small sections of the exterior of the building

Project status: The work is progressing on time and under budget at this point, according to Al Medeck, the general superintendent for the project.

Completion date: September 4

Architect: SJA Architects, Duluth

Engineer: Foster Jacobs and Johnson Inc., Duluth

Construction budget: $4.2 million

Scope of work: Installation of an updated firm alarm system, security system, energy efficient lighting and heating and cooling systems, emergency power generator and classroom Smart Board; upgrades to the school's playground equipment; roof replacement

Project status: The work is progressing on time and under budget at this point, according to Al Medeck, the general superintendent for the project.
