MOUNTAIN IRON -- Firefighters say a woman smoking while using an oxygen tank started a fire Wednesday morning in Mountain Iron.
It happened in the Raintree Apartments, Building Eight. Firefighters contained the flames to the woman's apartment, thanks in part to the actions of one resident who began fighting the fire when he saw the flames and smoke coming out of his neighbor's apartment.
"I just managed to get the flames dampened enough to call 911 and start running through the building getting people out of the building before the flames reactivated and started burning the building down," said Chris Schmidt.
The fire caused $80,000 in damage. The Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping two families displaced by the fire.
