A 65-year-old woman was fatally injured when she was hit by a vehicle Sunday night in Grand Lake Township.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported that witnesses traveling westbound in the 6600 block of Industrial Road reported seeing a woman lying in the eastbound driving lane about 9:15 p.m. Before they could turn around to assist her, the woman got up and was standing next to a bicycle when she was struck by another vehicle traveling eastbound.
The woman, Charlene Kelly, was airlifted to St. Luke's hospital in Duluth. She died at 4:30 a.m., St. Louis County Sheriff Sgt. Wade Rasch said.
Kelly's family reported that she suffered from dementia and had been gone on a bike ride for some time Sunday; family and friends were searching for her at the time of the accident.
The sheriff's office said no criminal charges are expected against the driver of the eastbound car, a 17-year-old Proctor boy.
