An assault charge was filed Monday in State District Court against a Duluth woman accused of taking part in the beating of Jim Carlson last week at his Last Place on Earth head shop on Superior Street.

Candice Joy Drift, 34, is charged with fifth-degree assault in the incident that occurred about 11 p.m. Wednesday. Carlson said he needed six stitches to close a wound below his lip and that he suffered a broken bone in his shoulder after being attacked.

Drift had been banned from the store and had been cited for trespassing. On Wednesday night, she came to the door of the shop about 9:20 p.m. and kicked it. She returned about 1½ hours later after the business closed and police had left the area.

According to police reports, Carlson came out of his shop and was jumped by Drift and an unidentified man, who was accompanied by another woman.

Carlson told police that Drift had gone after his girlfriend, Lava Haugen, with a knife last month. He said the defendant had a history of coming into his shop and causing problems.
