WLSSD yard waste compost site to open

With winter yielding to more spring-like weather, it's good timing that the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District's yard waste compost site opens Saturday.

Because of a likely rush to deposit material after the record April snows, WLSSD will have extended hours, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., every day from Saturday through May 13.

The weather also prohibited the compost site from opening.

"Although we typically open the yard waste site in mid-April, the late-season snow and rain has made the site very wet and inaccessible until now," said Heidi Ringhofer, WLSSD director of solid waste services. "We've had many calls from community members who are anxious to use the site, and it's finally dry enough for vehicle traffic. Because of the large number of callers and late opening, we decided to expand our hours."

WLSSD accepts leaves, grass clippings and garden waste at no charge and brush for a fee. Compost can be purchased in bags and in bulk by the yard.

Regular hours will resume May 14: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It will be closed the other days of the week.
