A sanitary sewer pump station in Gary that serves nearly 2,000 households will be replaced this year.

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District has awarded a $640,570 contract to Magney Construction of Chanhassen, Minn., to replace the station. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will pay 75 percent of the project's costs; the remainder will come from the WLSSD's capital budget.

The project will update and increase the reliability of the station.

"The new lift station construction includes a back-up generator, so if there was any issues with power that may lead to an overflow, that will be prevented," said AJ Matthews, an environmental program coordinator for the WLSSD.

The station handles the waste from about 1,950 households in the communities of Gary, New Duluth, Fond du Lac and Oliver. It's at 499 95th Ave. W., near a 1 million gallon storage basin that was built to help reduce sanitary overflows during heavy rainfalls.

The new station is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 1, although it will be operational July 1.
