The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is set to begin Sunday at East High School.
While the event begins at 1:02 p.m., the street closures will start at 8 a.m.
The East High School parking lot will be open only for mushers and event staff. Superior Street will be closed between 36th Avenue East and at 40th Avenue East to prepare the course crossing from East High School to Northland Country Club. Eastbound traffic on Superior Street will be directed down 36th Avenue East, and westbound traffic will be directed down 40th Avenue East to London Road.
There will be traffic delays at Glenwood Street, just west of Skyline Parkway; Jean Duluth Road, just north of Payne Farm Road; Vermillion Road, Pleasant View Road and Martin Road near Vermillion Road.
People can use 26th Avenue East for quicker access from Superior Street to London Road, drivers using 36th Avenue East may expect long delays. The DTA buses will detour from Superior Street to London Road between 36th and 43rd Avenues East during the event.
Parking will be restricted on 40th Avenue East, adjacent to East High School. Parking will not be allowed on the even side of the street. This will help with traffic congestion on the avenue. Throughout the eastern neighborhoods, residential streets will be posted to allow parking on one side of the street only, and Skyline Parkway will be posted for no parking from Glenwood Street to Hawk Ridge on both sides.
Police are urging motorists to drive with caution.
