The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the Twin Ports and points south and west for the possibility of more than a half-foot of snow by Tuesday afternoon.
The Northland will be on the north side of a storm system moving from the Dakotas southeast toward southern Minnesota and Chicago. Much of Minnesota will see heavy snow from this storm, and winter storm warnings are in effect for the Twin Cities. Areas along the Lake Superior shore may see some lake-enhanced snow totals due to easterly winds.
The watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon for Duluth, Superior, Cloquet and Two Harbors. It goes into effect earlier elsewhere. Here's a rundown of the forecast for different areas:
Duluth, Superior, Two Harbors, Cloquet, Washburn, Ashland
A winter storm watch is in effect from Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon. Snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches are possible with locally heavier amounts. East to northeast winds at 15 to 25 mph are expected, with higher gusts - espceially in areas near Lake Superior. The heaviest snow is expected Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

Grand Rapids, Bigfork, Aitkin, Walker, Hill City, Brainerd
A winter storm watch is in effect from late Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are possible, with east to northeast winds at 10 to 20 mph. The heaviest snow is expected Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
Hayward, Spooner
A winter storm watch is in effect from Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon. Snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are possible, with east to northeast winds at 10 to 20 mph. The heaviest snow is expected Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Hinckley, Grantsburg
A winter storm watch is in effect from Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon. Snow accumulations of 6 to 8 inches are possible, with east to northeast winds at 10 to 20 mph. The heaviest snow is expected Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
Twin Cities
A winter storm warning is in effect from midnight tonight through 6 p.m. Tuesday. Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches are possible with isolated amounts to near a foot. Southeast winds to 25 mph on Monday may cause blowing and drifting snow. Two periods of heavy snow are expected - from late tonight through Monday morning, and again from Monday night into Tuesday morning.
