Prepare for a blustery day across the Northland on Tuesday -- and keep an eye on the forecast as parts of the region may see accumulating snow later in the week.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for much of the Northland for Tuesday, including the Twin Ports.

North to northwest winds are forecast to pick up overnight as a storm intensifies over the Great Lakes; there's also a chance for some light rain or rain-snow mix in the region tonight.

Winds may reach 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 50 mph on Tuesday. Gale warnings are in effect for western Lake Superior.

Stronger winds -- perhaps gusting as high as 70 mph -- are expected on eastern Lake Superior. Lakeshore flood warnings are in effect for parts of the Lake Superior shore on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, with waves close to 30 feet possible.

In the wake of the wind, a quiet Wednesday is expected across the Northland before another storm system arrives on Thursday.

"An area of low pressure is expected to develop over the Upper Midwest and strengthen as it makes its way over Minnesota and Wisconsin. Rain during the day Thursday should transition to all snow overnight into Friday morning across the Northland," the Weather Service reported Monday afternoon.

There's still uncertainty about exact snowfall amounts and exactly where the heaviest snow may fall -- and the forecast may change a lot in the coming days.

Highs Friday and Saturday may struggle to climb out of the mid-30s.
