Who is Satveer Chaudhary?

Satveer Chaudhary is hardly a household name among Minnesota anglers, but his recent proposals to open Minnesota's fishing season a week earlier and reduce the walleye limit have vaulted him into the limelight.

Chaudhary is a DFL state senator from Fridley and is chairman of the Senate's Environment and Natural Resources Committee. He's an avid angler who owns a summer cabin on Fish Lake north of Duluth.

"Last year, I fished Lake of the Woods four times, Namakan [Lake] and Minnetonka down here," Chaudhary said.

Chaudhary, an attorney and business consultant, was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1996. He was elected to the state Senate in 2000 and became chairman of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee at the beginning of the 2007 legislative session.

"I think Chaudhary is a credible voice," Duluth conservationist David Zentner said. "He's a new guy on the scene. He loves to hunt and fish and snowmobile. I think he's bound and determined to aggressively promote sportsmen's and sportswomen's interests in his committee chairmanship."
