Thirteen merchants were cited by Duluth police for selling tobacco to minors last week during a compliance check in the western half of Duluth.

Officers conducted checks on 36 businesses licensed to sell tobacco products in Duluth, including grocery, liquor and convenience stores. Bars were not included.

The businesses cited include: Cub Foods, 615 W. Central Entrance; Walgreens, 1201 Miller Trunk Highway; Lakehead Travel Plaza, 3931 W. First St.; Inter-City Oil, 2 W. Central Entrance; Duluth Heights BP, 3 W. Central Entrance; Piedmont Bottle Shop, 2818 Piedmont Ave.; Spur, 2700 W. Michigan St.; M & H, 1230 W. Michigan St.; Little Store, 1831 W. Superior St.; Walgreens, 4501 Grand Ave.; Little Store, 1301 Commonwealth Ave.; Gary Milk House, 1331 Commonwealth Ave., and Boundary Mobil, 130 S. Boundary Ave.

The number represents a 36 percent failure rate of the checked businesses.
