Wet weather causes flood risk

With rains saturating the ground, areas in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin were under a flash-flood watch Wednesday and Thursday, particularly in areas surrounding lakes and rivers.

With this much precipitation falling, lakes and streams have been filling up. With more rain possible, there is still a chance of flooding in the Twin Ports area.

A flash flood warning was also issued for areas surrounding the Cloquet River, and lakes along the river. Homes and garages along the river and the lakes, particularly Hunter and Bowman, were in danger of being damaged. To relieve pressure on Island Lake, Minnesota Power opened up the dam so that the water could flow into the river and other lakes to make room for more.

On Monday and Tuesday, expect to see high pressure coming in, which will cause areas currently affected by the rain to dry out and experience warmer weather (until Thursday, at least).
