Welty to launch drive to recall Duluth School Board members

Harry Welty, a vocal critic of the Duluth school district's long-range plan, announced Tuesday his intentions to begin circulating a petition aimed at recalling certain members of the Duluth School Board.

Harry Welty, a vocal critic of the Duluth school district's long-range plan, announced Tuesday his intentions to begin circulating a petition aimed at recalling certain members of the Duluth School Board.

The move was prompted by the continued unwillingness of the majority of board members to acknowledge the community's discontent toward the long-range facilities plan, or at least give the community a chance to vote on it, Welty said.

According to Duluth district administration, the petition would not be binding.

"A petition for recall of a board member may be presented to the board but it is advisory in nature only, it does not force or authorize the board to take action," a statement released by the district said. The district's opinion on the petition was based on information provided by the Minnesota School Board Association and the district's legal representation, the release said.

Regardless of the authority of the petition, Welty is planning to move forward with it and intends to ask members of Let Duluth Vote to support him at a meeting Thursday night.

He said he also is seeking volunteers to help garner signatures for the petition at various polling sites on Election Day, Nov. 4.
