Winter storms damaged a vault toilet and two docks at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

Manitou Island and Michigan Island docks are closed while crews assess damage, and The York Island vault toilet is closed until it can be unearthed from layers of debris and sand.

York beaches are open for day use, and when weather allows, visitors will be able to access the island along the shorelines.

Storms take their toll on the islands every year, and it will take several weeks to assess the damage, said park superintendent Lynne Dominy in a statement.

Beaches, trails and docks are open for day use in accordance with social distancing guidelines to curb COVID-19. Spaces where social distancing, appropriate cleaning or staffing is limited will remain closed until further notice. The National Park Service encourages visitors to follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as local and state agencies.
