The Duluth School Board is expected to vote today on a name for the eastern middle school.

The seven-member committee picked to mull the names ended up recommending a choice of two: East and Ordean.

The other apparent front-runner -- Myers-Wilkins -- did not make the cut.

In a letter to the board, Assistant Superintendent Bill Gronseth said committee members cast two votes each, resulting in a first-place tie for East and Ordean. The committee is made up of board members and district employees, including Superintendent I.V. Foster and middle school principals Gina Kleive and Denise Clairmont.

Ordean was the name of what is now the new East High School, named for Duluth banker and philanthropist Albert Ordean. The old East High School, which will be the new middle school, was once East Middle School. The name Myers-Wilkins was suggested to honor Ruth Myers and Marge Wilkins, both Duluth educators.
