The Virginia Police Department is asking for the public's help in solving the weekend beating of a city resident.

According to the department, a woman called 911 from a pay phone around 3:30 a.m. Sunday to report that a man was lying in the north alley of the 500 block of Chestnut Street. Police found Marvin Payne, 45, who had been beaten about the head and face with a stick. He was conscious. He was taken first to Virginia Regional Medical Center and later transferred to St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where he was listed in fair condition this morning.

Police would like to talk to the woman who placed the 911 call or to anyone else with information on the beating. People can call (218) 748-7510 and asked for investigations.
