FARIBAULT, Minn. -- A medical examiner has testified that "practically every bone" in Jody Lee Morrow's skull was fractured during the attack that took her life at her Albert Lea, Minn., home.

Chad Jamie Gulbertson is on trial in Rice County for fatally stabbing and bludgeoning his former girlfriend in June 2009.

Medical Examiner Lindsey Thomas testified Monday the 38-year-old woman received at least 18 blunt force blows to the head and three stab wounds to the neck. A hammer was found near Morrow's body.

The defense argues it was Morrow who tried to attack Gulbertson, and that he acted in the heat of the moment to repel the attack.

The Faribault Daily News reports Morrow used a wheelchair because her right leg had been amputated below the knee.
