All veterans and active-duty military personnel are invited to march through downtown Duluth starting at 10:20 a.m. today at the Depot. The marchers, organized by branch of service, will follow Superior Street to Lake Avenue, cross Interstate 35 and then wind back to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center for the Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. There will be free parking at the DECC and free bus rides from there to the Depot at 9:30 a.m., 9:45 a.m. and 10 a.m. The Depot will be open at 8 a.m., with cookies and coffee provided by the Red Cross.
The march and the program at the DECC are organized by the city of Duluth with help from the Northland Veterans Service Committee.
The University of Wisconsin-Superior will host a "Recognition of the Heroes Among Us" award program at 11 a.m. in the Yellowjacket Atrium, recognizing the work of students, faculty, staff and alumni who have served the nation. At 12:30 p.m., there will be student presentations on the history of dog tags, U.S. military funeral rituals and how wars have changed funeral beliefs and customs.
At 1 p.m., UWS will be one of 75 campuses across the country to participate in a moment of silence, followed by a reading of the names of Minnesota and Wisconsin residents who have lost their lives in service to the country since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
