BIG TEN

Clemson 90, Minnesota 68

Clemson dominated the offensive boards, used an effective full-court press and got better reserve in beating Minnesota in Minneapolis.

K.C. Rivers scored 22 points off the bench to lead the Tigers, and Clemson's reserves outscored Minnesota's reserves 40-5.

Vernon Hamilton added 13 points and Cliff Hammonds 12 for Clemson (8-0), which has won its first eight games for the third time in the past five years, including an 11-0 start last year. James Mays added 11 points and 10 rebounds while Trevor Booker also had 11 points.

Dan Coleman scored 18 points for Minnesota (2-5), which lost its fifth straight game -- the Gophers longest losing streak since a six-game skid during the 1962-63 season. Brandon Smith added 15 points, Lawrence McKenzie 14 and Spencer Tollackson 11.

Clemson held a 43-22 rebounding edge, including 24-5 on the offensive end.

The Gophers shot 72.7 percent in the first half but took only 22 shots, in part because of 12 first-half turnovers. Many of them were caused by an inability to get the ball up the court with the Tigers -- particularly Mays and Hamilton -- harassing Minnesota guards. Minnesota, which had 51 turnovers in its last three losses, finished with a season-high 24 turnovers.

Minnesota got within 14 points on a 3-pointer by McKenzie with 6:30 to play, but Hammonds answered for Clemson with a pair of layups off Gopher turnovers.

Tyler Hansbrough started and ended North Carolina's game-breaking 17-2 run in the second half and the seventh-ranked Tar Heels went on to a victory over No. 3 Ohio State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill, N.C.

In a game featuring two of the country's top freshman classes -- with Greg Oden, the best of the bunch, sitting on the Ohio State bench in street clothes with a towel around his neck -- Hansbrough, a preseason All-America as a sophomore took over down low.

The 6-foot-9 forward was the key inside as the Tar Heels (5-1) were able to overcome an incredible 3-point shooting performance by the Buckeyes (6-1), who were playing outside the Columbus city limits for the first time this season.

Hansbrough finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds, and freshman Wayne Ellington added 19 for North Carolina, which trailed by 10 points in the first half and was down 68-63 with 10:50 to play.

Ron Lewis had 30 points for Ohio State, which finished 13-for-26 from 3-point range.

Boston College 65, Michigan State 58

Jared Dudley scored 30 points with 10 rebounds to lead Boston College to the home win over Michigan State in the Eagles' debut in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

Sean Williams blocked five shots and Shamari Spears had nine rebounds as BC (3-2) outrebounded the Spartans 37-36. Michigan State (6-2) had outrebounded every one of its opponents in its first seven games.

Drew Neitzel, who came into the game as the Spartans' leading scorer with an average of 18.3 points per game, did not make a basket until there was 12:24 left and finished with 12 points. He had scored at least 20 points in each of the previous three games.

Virginia Tech 69, Iowa 65

Zabian Dowdell scored 18 points and Virginia Tech outscored Iowa 36-18 over a 17-minute stretch spanning the halves, then held on despite poor foul shooting to defeat the Hawkeyes in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Blacksburg, Va.

Iowa (2-4) lost its fourth straight. The Hawkeyes were led by Adam Haluska with 24 points.

PURDUE 61, No. 25 Virginia 59

Tarrance Crump drove to the basket and hit a floater with 1 second remaining, giving Purdue a victory over No. 25 Virginia in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Boilermakers (5-1) blew a nine-point lead midway through the second half and fell behind by five before consecutive 3-pointers by Marcus Green, Chris Lutz and David Teague. The Cavaliers (4-1) tied the game for the final time at 59 on two free throws by Sean Singletary with 29 seconds left.

After a Purdue timeout, Carl Landry held the ball away from the basket until about 7 seconds remained, then got the ball to Crump, who drove in and scored from the right side of the lane. Virginia had one more chance, but turned the ball over on the inbounds pass.
