A Lake Nebagamon police officer was struck by a motor vehicle Tuesday night in a hit-and-run incident, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.
Officer Jesse Beasley was airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, where he is listed in good condition.
Lake Nebagamon Police Chief Ron Sullivan said Beasley suffered bruising on his forehead and a dislocated shoulder, but no broken bones or internal bleeding. The officer, who has been on the village police force for a year and a half, may be released by Thursday.
According to the sheriff's department, the accident happened shortly before 11 p.m. on South Lake Boulevard just west of County Highway s. Beasley, who was wearing a reflective vest and had his squad car's headlights and emergency lights activated, was out of his car checking on an injured animal when he was hit.
The suspect vehicle reportedly was traveling south on Highway S and turned onto South Lake Boulevard. It continued westbound after hitting Beasley. It is believed that the vehicle was traveling with its headlights off. It is possibly a white or gray-colored Pontiac Grand Am type car that may have front-end or drive-side damage.
