The ice is creating difficult driving conditions across northern Minnesota, the Minnesota Department of Transportation reports.

According to MnDOT, St. Louis, Aitkin, Carlton, Itasca, Koochiching, Pine and Lake counties are all experiencing difficult driving conditions. Beltrami, Hubbard and Lake of the Woods counties are experiencing very difficult driving conditions.

"All of our snow- and ice-control assets are going to be out today, all of our teams will be working until this thing is done," John Bray, regional MnDOT spokesman said. "We have about 190 trained and certified snowplow operators, we have 95 snowplows. Everything is going to be out. We'll be working 24-hours shifts. We'll do our best to keep the roads in good shape."

State Patrol Sgt. Mark Baker reported that highways and the Interstate were in good condition shortly after noon, but that is expected to change.

"Folks should be aware of ever-changing conditions, use extreme caution and don't travel unless they have to," he said.
