The University of Wisconsin-Superior will require everyone, regardless of vaccine status, to wear masks when inside its buildings beginning Monday, despite Douglas County not currently meeting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's mask-recommended threshold.
“We are striving to do everything within our power to deliver a top-quality educational experience, while continuing to help slow or stop the spread of COVID-19,” Chancellor Renée Wachter said in a news release.
The University of Minnesota Duluth, the College of St. Scholastica, Lake Superior College and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College are all already requiring masks.
Douglas County is currently experiencing "moderate" transmission of COVID-19, according to the CDC, which recommends masking in communities experiencing a "substantial" level of transmission or higher.
Only about 9% of the country was below that threshold as of the CDC's last report. Douglas County in Wisconsin, with 18 new cases in the last week, and Cook County in Minnesota are the only counties in the Northland below the masking threshold.

The COVID-19 vaccine clinic on the UW-Superior campus will move Tuesday from the Wessman Arena to Room 157 in the Yellowjacket Union. Walk-in appointments are available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.
COVID-19 tests will continue to be available in the Marcovich Wellness Center through Sept. 30, at least.
