A 31-year-old man is dead after unattended food caused a fire early Sunday in St. Paul.
The St. Paul Fire Department responded to calls of smoke from a duplex on the 1900 block of Upper Afton Road in St. Paul just after 12:45 a.m.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly and did a search through the home. They found an unresponsive man in a back bedroom, according to a news release from the fire department.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Regions Hospital where he died, according to the release. The man was home alone at the time.
The food the man was cooking caught fire and spread to the kitchen cabinets, producing large amounts of smoke and gutting the kitchen of the duplex, according to the release.
