UMD's Nielson to leave the sidelines for administration

When Bob Corran's position as director of athletics at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) was vacated in May, the university began a nationwide search for a replacement.

When Bob Corran's position as director of athletics at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) was vacated in May, the university began a nationwide search for a replacement.

That search ended where it began when UMD Chancellor Kathryn Martin named head football coach Bob Nielson the new athletic director at a Wednesday press conference.

Nielson will finish the season as head football coach before stepping down to become athletic director effective Dec. 1.

By naming Nielson athletic director, UMD has chosen someone who knows the system, someone who is comfortable with the organization. "This was the right decision to move to," said Nielson. "I've been here for 4 1/2 years and developed a strong connection with the community. I guarantee my strongest commitment."

The transition from head football coach to athletic director will be less difficult for Nielson because he is staying at the same university. "I understand how everything works here," said Nielson. "I will miss the close relationships with the student-athletes (on the football team) the most."

Nielson thanked his wife Terri and daughter Amanda for their support and for being present at the press conference. Nielson's daughter is a freshman at UMD.

As head coach of the football team at UMD, Nielson has compiled a record of 31-16, including an 11-1 record in 2002.

In the past, Nielson has served at both athletic director and coach. He was the associate athletic director and head football coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 1996-99. Before that, Nielson was athletic director and head football coach at Wartburg College, his alma mater, from 1991-96. Nielson says that the athletic director at UMD is different. "There needs to be two different people as football coach and athletic director," said Nielson. "This is a position that needs my full attention."

Vice Chancellor for University Relations Bill Wade will remain interim athletic director until Dec. 1.
