UMD doubled its goal total in the second period on goals from winger Nick Kemp and defenseman Josh Meyers for a 4-0 lead over Northern Michigan.
Kemp got past Northern Michigan goalie Brian Stewart to the near side on a shot from the left circle with 5:50 left in the period. Seconds later, Northern Michigan center Billy Smith hit the right pipe, the third pipe of the game for the Wildcats, and on the next stoppage of play the shot was reviewed. It was confirmed as no goal.
The Bulldogs scored again from a faceoff as Meyers took a MacGregor Sharp draw with 2:56 remaining. Northern Michigan coach Walt Kyle pulled starting goalie Brian Stewart at that point and inserted sophomore Derek Janzen.
UMD led in shots 25-16 after two periods.
