Everyone is invited to be a Bulldog this Saturday and help celebrate UMD Homecoming.
A full day of activities is planned at the University of Minnesota-Duluth around the theme "2001 A Bulldog Odyssey." Four Bulldog sports teams will be in action, and there will also be parades and a carnival.
A major highlight of the day will be the annual pet parade at 12:30 p.m. in front of Griggs Field. There will be a special award given to the pet -- any kind of pet -- that most resembles KBJR's well-known weather forecaster George Kessler.
The popular meteorologist will be one of several judges awarding prizes to pets in several categories. In addition to a George twin, judges will be looking for the pet with the best homecoming costume, cutest pet, cutest puppy and most obedient pet.
Last year, the winning look-alike pet was a bulldog resembling Police Chief Scott Lyons. Everyone is invited to bring their pet and participate. For more information, send e-mail to Tia Rich at trich1@d.umn.edu .
The Bulldog Carnival will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Griggs Field parking lot and will include live music, food, a kiddie carnival, the pet parade and prizes. There will be a special car decorating event at 11 a.m. to create a Bulldog Odyssey Spaceship.
The annual Homecoming Parade will begin at 11:45 a.m. and proceed from the UMD Darland Building along College Street, right onto Junction Avenue, onto St. Marie Street, then to University Drive on campus ending at the Griggs Field parking lot.
As the parade passes the judging stage at the parking lot, Air Force ROTC cadets will state a special tribute to police officers, firefighters and medical personnel.
The Chili Challenge Tailgate Party will be held at 12:30 p.m. in the same parking lot. The homecoming football game starts at 2 p.m. as the Bulldogs host Moorhead.
Other Saturday UMD homecoming events:
* At 10:30 a.m., UMD women's soccer vs. Crookston at Griggs Field.
* At 7 p.m., UMD women's volleyball vs. Wayne State at Romano Gym.
* At 7:05 p.m., UMD men's hockey faces the University of Regina at the DECC in an exhibition game.
* At 9:15 p.m., homecoming dance on a Vista Fleet Cruise.
* On Sunday at 1 p.m., UMD women's soccer vs. Moorhead.
