UMD changes athletic department staffing

Karen Stromme and Mark Rudolph will have increased duties within the Minnesota Duluth athletic department in the wake of last week's football coaching changes, athletic director Bob Nielson said Tuesday.

Karen Stromme and Mark Rudolph will have increased duties within the Minnesota Duluth athletic department in the wake of last week's football coaching changes, athletic director Bob Nielson said Tuesday.

Stromme, with the department since 1983, will oversee approximately 11 of the school's 16 varsity sports in addition to facilities and event management. She's been in her role as assistant athletic director for five years.

Rudolph has been promoted from director of athletic development to associate athletic director for external relations. He'll supervise department fund raising, alumni relations, marketing and sports information. He was hired at UMD a year ago.

Kyle "Bubba" Schweigert resigned last week as UMD's football coach to take an assistant's position at Southern Illinois University, and Nielson accepted the dual role of athletic director and football coach.

"My new position has driven some of the changes, but we're always looking at how to do things better administratively,'' said Nielson, athletic director since 2003 and previously football coach from 1999-2003.

Nielson will continue to oversee men's and women's hockey, men's and women's basketball and football.
