The United States in September imported a total of 2.1 million net tons of steel, down 17 percent from August, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.
The total includes 1.8 million net tons of finished steel, a 9 percent decline compared to August.
Over the first nine months of 2007, 25.9 million net tons of steel were imported.
China, South Korea, Brazil, Japan and India were the largest exporters of steel to the United States in September.
On an annualized basis, 2007 steel imports would be 34.6 million net tons.
