An unprecedented federal-county collaboration will make it possible for two assistant St. Louis County attorneys to appear in Federal Court on behalf of the United States Attorney's Office, specifically in cases of white-collar crimes and the trafficking of children.

The new relationship was announced Friday at a news conference in front of the Duluth Federal Building.

Leslie Beiers and Nathaniel Stumme have been named assistant United States attorneys, U.S. Attorney B. Todd Jones said. Both will continue on as full-time county attorneys, but they will be able to represent the U.S. Attorney's Office in detention, arraignment and other criminal cases.

"It will enhance the cooperation between the two agencies," said St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin.

The U.S. Attorney's Office does not have relationship like this with any other county in Minnesota, Jones said.

Beiers has been with the St. Louis County Attorney's Office since 1994, Stumme since 2008. Both have backgrounds practicing criminal law and will receive training as federal lawyers.
