Two former Grand Rapids group home residents have been sentenced for their roles in the violent assault of a staff member in December.
Jared Marquee Beaulieu and Dacota Geoffrey Smith, both 18, will serve time behind bars for the Dec. 13 assault, which involved a sock full of pool balls, a frying pan and a computer monitor.
At a Monday appearance in State District Court in Grand Rapids, Judge Jon Maturi sentenced Beaulieu to an executed sentence of six years and two months in prison. Smith received a sentence of just over 17 years, but had the time stayed in favor of 10 years of probation, which will include a year at the Itasca County Jail.
The charges allege that Beaulieu, Smith and two other juveniles severely beat a staff member at the Teens in Transition group home in order to steal cigarettes and medication before running from the facility.
Beaulieu and Smith each pleaded guilty to a count of first-degree assault. The two other defendants are facing charges in juvenile court.
