For the first time in several years, students from local high schools attended the annual Youth in Government Model Assembly. This year's assembly took place Jan. 8 through 11 at the Minnesota State Capitol and the Minneapolis Hilton Hotel.
The event allowed high school and middle school students from across Minnesota to participate in a mock legislative session involving role-playing as members of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government or as members of the media.
Joe Fifield, a sophomore at Marshall High School, served as an appellate court judge. Emily Flesch, a senior at Hermantown High School, participated as a newspaper journalist. Her first assignment was a one-on-one interview Secretary of State Mark Ritche. Her story made the headlines for the Model Assembly Newspaper, Capitol Connections.
Duluth Youth in Government is accepting new members for the upcoming Model United Nations this spring, as well as for the next year's Model Assembly.
