BEMIDJI, Minn. -- An elderly Minnesota couple died in a head-on collision south of Bemidji on Tuesday.
The Minnesota State Patrol reported that James Carlson, 89, of Laporte, Minn., was driving south on U.S. Highway 71 about nine miles south of Bemidji at about 2:30 p.m. when his Oldsmobile Silhouette collided head-on with a northbound Chevrolet SUV.
Carlson and his wife, Phyllis, 87, died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the other vehicle, Russell Sandry, 76, of Box Elder, S.D., was transported to a Fargo hospital with serious injuries, the Patrol reported. All of those involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.
The crash remains under investigation.
